Wendy’s is one of the most popular fast-food chains in America, in part due to their philosophy of “fresh, never frozen” burgers. The chain was started in Ohio in 1969 and now has more than 6,800 locations worldwide. If you love the taste of Wendy’s food and you’d like to learn a little more, let me answer these frequently asked questions. 1. Is Wendy's Junk Food? Answer 1: Wendy’s is not technically junk food because it's not a sweet, dessert-type of food. Nor is it salty food filled with carbs. When people think of junk food, they think of foods such as chips, pastries, crackers, cookies, and other similar items. In other words, they think of something you buy as a snack, not as a meal. While you can certainly have any item on Wendy’s menu as a snack, most people eat it as a meal. Therefore, it's usually not considered true junk food. Answer 2: It all depends on what you order. Junk food contains little or no nutritional value and is often filled with sugars or fat. In other words, there's a difference between ordering a burger or a chicken salad for example. Their Southwest Avocado Chicken Salad contains about half the amount of carbs compared to a hamburger. They also have less fat. So yes, some say it's junk food while others say it's not. 2. Is Wendy's Good? Wendy’s has been consistently growing and currently sells more than $1.7 billion worth of food each and every year. If you ask me, that simply doesn’t happen by accident. They have also spread to a total of 29 countries. Not only is the company where it is today because of its delicious food, but also because they have a very varied menu that appeals to everyone. Indeed, their breakfast foods, lunch and dinner foods, salads, and dessert items are all absolutely delicious. 3. Is Wendy's Lemonade Good? Wendy’s lemonade is really good and loved by most of their customers. Why? For one thing, they're all-natural and include only natural ingredients. For instance, their strawberry lemonade is made with real strawberries. Furthermore, their peach strawberry is made with real peach puree, and their tropical berry lemonade is made with fresh strawberries, passionfruit, and dragonfruit. They also have a regular all-natural lemonade made with natural ingredients (without any special flavorings). 4. Is Wendy's Water Free? Wendy’s sells bottled water that isn’t free. The policy regarding tap water varies depending on the franchise manager. If you go to Wendy’s and order a cup of regular tap water, many of the restaurants will charge you a fee for the cup they’re providing. Some people think they’re charging for the water, but that's incorrect. They're charging for the cup. However, it's usually a very nominal fee of around $0.25 or so. In some cases, you can have the water for free, but again, it depends on the manager. 5. Does Wendy's Give Refills on Lemonade? While Wendy’s gives free refills on their basic soft drink choices, their lemonade does not come with a “free refill” option. This is because their lemonades are considered premium drinks, and Wendy’s doesn’t give out free refills on any of their premium drinks. So, if you want more of their yummy lemonade after you drink the very first cup, you’ll have to come up with some more cash. Free refills seem to be less common these days, at least that's my impression. Some places stopped them all together, like Panda Express for example (even though there could be exceptions - and things change all the time). 6. Does Wendy's Have Onion Rings? As of this writing, there are no onion rings on Wendy’s menu. There are, however, other options when you’re looking for a great side dish. This includes regular French fries, bacon cheese fries, cheese fries, and a variety of baked potatoes with different toppings. They even have small 4-piece chicken nugget servings that help hit the spot on those days when their sandwich isn’t enough to fill you up. Since Wendy’s continuously comes up with new ideas, I wouldn't be surprised if they start to serve onion rings in the future. 7. Does Wendy's Put Salt on Their Fries? Wendy’s does put salt on their French fries, but it's not regular processed salt. Instead, they use a more natural type of sea salt to lightly salt their fries. They also make their fries with fresh potatoes (and with the skins on) to give them a much better overall flavor and more nutrition. If you love French fries but you don’t like them loaded down with salt, you’ll find Wendy’s fries to be just right. 8. Does Wendy's Grill Their Burgers? Yes. Wendy’s uses a type of grill called a clamshell grill. Patties are placed in 2 x 2 rows, salted, after which the top of the grill is closed. After a certain amount of time, the patties are flipped and cooked on the other side so that both sides look the same. They also have a “holding time” on their patties, which means they're only kept for so long. All of Wendy’s dishes are made to order and therefore always taste fresh. 9. Why Is Wendy's Drive-Thru So Slow? If you compare Wendy’s drive-thru times to those of other fast-food chains, you might be surprised to find that they aren’t really slower. It depends on the location and the time of day. Keep in mind that Wendy’s serves everything made to order so that customers always get the best-tasting, freshest food. If they’ve recently made some burgers, you can get them quickly in the drive-thru line. However, “made to order” often means you have to wait until the burger is cooked and ready to be served, and this takes time. In my opinion it all depends on the person and the situation. If you're in a hurry, yes, I know how slow things may seem. Just remember that restaurants do their best. For example, some people complained about how slow the drive-thru is at Jack in the Box. So, the company listened to these customers and changed things for the better. Others say that Popeyes is the slowest, so yes, we all have our opinion about speed. 10. Why Is Wendy's So Expensive? Compared to other fast-food chains, Wendy’s prices are considered somewhere in the middle. They may seem high when taken individually (a single cheeseburger costs roughly $4.19). However, since they're made to order and therefore always fresh, most people agree that they're worth the money. They also have specially priced items on their menus, which includes their 4 for $4 foods. While it’s easy to feel like you’re spending a lot of money when you eat at Wendy’s, there are still ways to save money when you go there. 11. Does Wendy's Accept 50- or 100-Dollar Bills? Wendy’s does indeed accept 50- and 100-dollar bills. However, if it’s early in the morning and they haven’t had too many customers, it may be difficult for them to provide you with the exact change. For the most part, Wendy’s employees work hard to make change for large bills such as 50s and 100s, so you shouldn’t have any problems with this. If you order Wendy’s food through a food-delivery service such as Uber or DoorDash, you’ll need to inform someone ahead of time that you’re paying with a large bill. This allows the driver to prepare for the right amount of change. 12. Does Wendy's Accept Tips? Technically, fast-food workers don't get tips because they make at or above minimum wage. If you wish to tip a Wendy’s worker, they may or may not be able to accept it. It all depends on the restaurant's management. More often than not, tips are not allowed, but that’s only on paper. You're certainly never obligated to tip a Wendy’s worker, but if you just wish to do so, some of them will accept it and others won’t. Final Thoughts I just wanted to add a little thought here: Of course it's a matter of personal taste when it comes to questions like "Is Wendy's good". I mean, who am I to decide that. But yeah, even though I enjoy their taste every now and then, there are always exceptions. That being said, some of these questions are answered from a "generally speaking" point of view.
